Upward Bound Explores the World of Waves

Last Tuesday we had the pleasure of hosting a group of 52 Upward Bound students from southwest Colorado and New Mexico. Upward Bound is a program that provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in pre-college performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families, high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree, and low-income, first generation military veterans who are preparing to enter postsecondary education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rates at which participants enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. Our visitors were invited to join us for a presentation of our World of Waves STEM Workshop. They spent the morning exploring electromagnetic waves, the roles of waves in the human body and how waves help us understand Earth systems.

Listening to how sound travels through different media.

Observing the electromagnetic spectrum using diffraction grading and different filters.

Seeing the world through a night vision camera.

Marshmallows help us demonstrate air pressure.

Testing the capabilities of fiber optics.

Checking blood oxygen levels with pulse oximeters.

Creating waves in water.

Learning wave properties such as amplitude and frequency as demonstrated by a slinky.
