Engineering the Future: Tools and Technologies for Classroom Innovation (At Your School)

The Engineering the Future STEM Workshop blends science content and engineering practices with tools, technologies and methods for incorporating innovation, invention and project-based learning in the classroom. This full-day STEM emersion experience, supporting Colorado and Next Generation Science Standards, provides multiple entry-points and opportunities to incorporate engaging technologies and student-directed ‘making’ in three learning modules:

Invention Literacy with Makey Makey and Scratch:
This workshop module uses simple and easy to use technology interfaces (JoyLabz – Makey Makeys) and computer programming software (MIT-Scratch) as platforms for exploring opportunities to incorporate innovation, invention and invention literacy in the classroom. With options for beginner and experienced users, the workshop will provide the materials and opportunities for participants to learn and apply STEM content to an innovation design challenge.

Key Concepts: Computers, Programming, Technology, Innovation, Invention, Circuits, Switches, Conduction/Resistance, Materials Science and the Engineering Design Process.


Project-Based Engineering in Biomechanics:
Designing and building an assistive device is a great way to blend life science content with science and engineering practices, physical science concepts, and real-world applications. In this module participants will use the engineering design process to guide a student-directed ‘build’ of an upper arm assistive device. This project-based activity includes measurement, math applications, materials selection and designing and building the mechanism, human body interfaces, control and power systems.

Key Concepts: Motion, Movement, Forces, Simple Machines, Angles, Circuits, Motors, Gears, Pulleys, Human Body Systems, Measurement, Estimation and Math Applications.


Making and Maker Spaces for STEM Projects:
In this station-based module, learners will be introduced to cutting-edge technologies for classroom ‘making’ and have the opportunity to design, create and take home their own STEAM creation made from materials in our maker space. This experience models and demonstrates how to organize and safely facilitate open-ended, student-directed projects in a low-tech maker space that includes wood/plastic/fabric, hand tools, power tools, fasteners, hardware, glues, wires, LED lights and batteries.

Key Concepts: Materials, Properties of Materials, Criteria, the Engineering Design Process, Innovation, Using hand and Power Tools, Circuits, Time and Project Management, Creativity.



  • STEM Workshops can accommodate one or up to three full classes (90 students).
  • The Science Discovery team will arrive at your school the evening before, or early the morning of programs to set up an extensive set of teaching materials and activities
  • The workshop can run in a single, or multiple classrooms
  • One class, Foundation for Flow, is best suited for an uncarpeted room with access to water
  • Ideally, two and three-class workshops will have access to an auditorium or multipurpose room for a group introduction and wrap-up activities
  • Programming can accommodate full-day and period-based schedules with three 45-75 minute classes
  • Sample Schedule (75-minute classes):
    • 9-9:30am: Introduction
    • 9:45-11am: Class One
    • 11-11:45am: Lunch
    • 11:45am-1pm: Class Two
    • 1-1:15pm: Break
    • 1:15-2:30pm: Class Three
    • 2:30-3pm: Wrap-Up
